The dentist has switched on the lamp and leans over me, the lamp hums softly with this light - this bright light that makes every unevenness, every discoloration, every weakness visible. I can't hide anything.
I remember the first throbbing two weeks ago. Barely noticeable, easy to pass over. A pulling sensation that could be breathed away. I ignored it. Just like I ignore a lot of things that stir up my insides. But the throbbing remained. It grew stronger. I became restless.

Preliminary remark
America can be so many things, but for Alexandra Daunderer it is above all a taste. Smoky, slightly caramel-sweet and a hint of spiciness, although of course she doesn't say spicy, but spicy. This is how the barbecue sauce from Sweet Baby Ray's tastes.
The sauce is on the far right shelf in her store, third row from the bottom, brown bottle, white cap, with the slogan: „The sauce is the boss!“ Alexandra Daunderer is a vegetarian, but she thinks that the sauce not only goes well with steaks, but is also fabulous with pizza. „The dough, the cheese and a light drizzle of sauce. It tastes divine.“
For years, customers have been coming to her store Dragonfly Inn in Kaiserslautern's industrial estate because it serves real American barbecue sauces. Or jelly beans that are so sweet they almost make your teeth stick together. And, of course, macaroni cheese, which is now even organic. Because even Americans are changing, says Alexandra Daunderer.
