Kanzeon Sangha Germany e.V.

Previous

The History

Already since 1987 there were different Zen groups in several cities in Germany under the name “Kanzeon Zen Circle”. The spiritual leadership of these groups and the Kanzeon Zen Circle was provided by Zen Master Dennis Genpo Merzel Roshi.
Genpo Roshi had been invited by his student Dr. Linda Myoki Lehrhaupt, Sensei, to teach in Germany. Each fall and spring, sesshins were held at Linda’s center in Bedburg-Erft.
In 1996 the association Kanzeon Sangha Deutschland e.V. was founded to intensify and promote the Zen teachings in the tradition of Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi Roshi and Genpo Merzel Roshi and their successors. Since then, the association has been the “umbrella” for all our activities and the sponsor of the Zen Center Düsseldorf.

Nowadays

The present

As of March 2019, Christian Jikishin of Wolkahof, Sensei, lineage holder and successor to Genpo Roshi, has taken over the spiritual care of Kanzeon Sangha. Furthermore, the association is constantly supported in its practice through close contact with Anton Tenkei Coppens Roshi, abbot of the Zen River Temple in the Netherlands. In addition to weekly meditation evenings, Zen days (zazenkais) are currently held twice a year with Tenkei Coppens Roshi and his successor Hans Daishin Fischer Sensei in Düsseldorf.
The exchange and invitations of teachers from other communities, which has existed for decades, is also maintained – but very limited by the Corona crisis in 2020.
Kanzeon Sangha Deutschland e.V. is a member of the German Buddhist Union (DBU) and maintains contact and exchange with other groups with similar orientation also on an international level.
